This spicy Korean Stir-fried Fish Cake (Eomuk Bokkeum or Odeng Bokkeum) recipe is so incredibly easy to make.

Stir-fried fish cake is a very popular side dish in Korea. Korean fish cakes are called eomuk (어묵) or odeng (오뎅). Whenever I take my friends or family to a Korean restaurant, the fish cake side dish is usually one of the favorites for almost everyone. Korean fish cake is not very expensive and easy to make, which is why a lot of restaurants will serve this as a complimentary side dish.

Today, we are sharing with you the spicy version. There is also a non-spicy version if you or your loved ones need or prefer a recipe that is not spicy. Personally, I like both versions. I’m just a happy camper if there is at least fish cake on the table. Here is our recipe of the non-spicy version of stir-fried fish cakes.

Key features and tips

We usually make a batch of these fish cakes and eat them within 2-3 days. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can find fish cakes in the frozen aisle of your local Korean or Asian grocery store/market.

This recipe is easily customizable as far as the spice level. If you really want to kick it up a notch and you love spicy food, you can add in a bit more Korean red chili pepper powder than what we have suggested. We have provided the ingredient amounts that are a comfortable heat level as far as spiciness. Although, with that said we are able to personally tolerate spicy foods with ease since we eat it all the time. If you need something that’s more mild but still has a little bit of spice, feel free to start with half of the amount of Korean red chili pepper powder.

Serving Suggestions

We usually make a big batch and pull them out of the fridge during mealtimes to use as a side dish. That way we have these fish cakes ready to go whenever we make the main meal components such as a soup of some sort and, of course, freshly steamed rice. You could even just make some rice and have a variety of side dishes as your meal. We also do this too if we are crunched on time and need a simple meal quickly because we usually have several side dishes ready to go at any given time.
