A super easy shrimp fried rice that tastes great. The whole family is going to love this healthier and homemade shrimp fried rice.
Who doesn’t love takeout? It is so easy and convenient! However, there are ingredients hidden in most takeout options that just aren’t good for our bodies. Many are loaded with tons of salt, MSG, and are very greasy. Why not make a homemade version where you can control all of the ingredients? Our delicious fried rice recipe is healthier and makes you feel a lot less guilty.
Key features and tips
We decided to use cooked shrimp for this recipe. It just made the recipe that much simpler to make. However, feel free to use any protein of your choice. You could use chicken, beef, pork, tofu, or you could even just load the fried rice up with more vegetables.
If you want to use something other than the Dasida beef soup stock powder due to the MSG in it, then feel free to substitute it with another umami flavor enhancer. You could use an umami mushroom powder, like this one. We only use a very little bit for this whole recipe so we feel like a little here and there is okay for us. However, we also know some people have sensitivities to MSG, so in that case, please feel free to swap it with something you can have.
We feel like we added enough salt via the stir-fry sauce, plus the salting of each vegetable that we cook separately. We know that typical takeout is usually loaded with excess sodium and why we think our version is much healthier for you because you know exactly how much salt is in it. We recommend doing a taste test first after using our suggested amounts. There is nothing worse than ruining a big batch of fried rice due to accidentally adding in too much salt. You could also simply salt your own bowl of fried rice if you feel you need a tad bit more. This way everyone can have their own bowl of fried rice to their liking. We really think you’ll be pleased with this less sodium and healthy version of shrimp fried rice though!

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Combine ingredients to make the stir-fry sauce
First, let’s make the stir-fry sauce so it is ready to go when we need it. Mix all of the ingredients for the stir-fry sauce together well in a small bowl. Set aside.
Step 2: Stir-fry each vegetable separately
Next, we are going to stir-fry each vegetable separately. We do this so we get the perfect cook for each vegetable. Place a frying pan on medium-high heat. Add a bit of oil to the bottom of the pan and add the carrots. Add a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Stir-fry the carrots for about 4-5 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside. Next, add the onions to the frypan and add a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes. Set onions aside with the carrots. Next, add in a bit more oil and the sliced celery. Stir-fry the celery for about 3 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside with the other vegetables. Finally, stir-fry the green onions for about 1 minute. Remove from the pan and set aside with the other vegetables.
Step 3: Stir-fry the shrimp
Add a bit more oil to the frying pan. Add the shrimp and stir-fry for 3 minutes just to give them a little color and to warm them up. Set aside with the vegetables.
Step 4: Scramble the eggs
Beat the eggs in a small bowl. Add a bit more oil to the frying pan. Pour the beaten eggs into the frying pan. Scramble the eggs and cook thoroughly. Set the scrambled eggs aside on the same plate with the shrimp and vegetables.
Step 5: Stir-fry the rice
Add a bit more oil to the bottom of the stir-fry pan and add in the rice. Stir-fry the rice for about 7 minutes until it gets some color to it.
Step 6: Add everything back in the frying pan plus add the stir-fry sauce
Add the vegetables, shrimp, eggs, and stir-fry sauce to the pan with the rice. Mix together and continue to stir-fry together. Continue stir-frying together for about 5 minutes.
Step 7: Remove from heat and add green onions
Remove from heat. Enjoy! Top with more fresh chopped green onions if you’d like!
