Asian-style Jalapeno Green Onion Sauce

by Asian Recipes At Home

This Asian-style Jalapeno and Green Onion Sauce is savory and has a kick of spice from the red chili powder (gochugaru) along with fresh jalapenos. It is a great sauce to add a kick of flavor to tofu, rice, noodles, soup, eggs or even Korean pancakes (pajeon). You can even make this sauce Whole30 or Paleo compliant with just a couple ingredient swaps – the recommendations for that are further down in this post.

Spicy raw jalapenos, fresh green onions with a blend of a few different Asian ingredients make this sauce irresistible. Spicy, soy sauce goodness (if you are doing a Whole30 or a Paleo diet see our recommended ingredient swaps below). This is really like a spicy/savory salsa. It is so easy to make. It only takes about 5 minutes from start to finish. Maybe a few more minutes longer if you’re not a fast chopper and dicer with the knife, but you get the picture. It takes very little time to whip this savory sauce up once you have all the ingredients on-hand.

This sauce can really be used on almost anything to add a savory and spicy kick to your dish. We originally made this sauce to put on some simple pan-fried tofu (see below). Drizzle a bit on the golden brown, pan-fried tofu. You can also, scoop a bit more of the sauce on each individual bite as you like. Yum! We also think the uses for this sauce has endless possibilities! We would love to know in the comments what you decided to use this sauce for.

Ingredients Needed

Most of the ingredients needed for this delicious Asian spicy sauce recipe is easily attainable at most grocery stores. The only ingredient you might need to go purchase online or at an Asian market is the red chili powder (gochugaru). Depending on where you live, you might also need to purchase fish sauce online or at an Asian market. We really like the fish sauce below if you’re wanting to purchase a good quality fish sauce online – it is also Whole30 approved!

  • 2 jalapenos, finely diced/brunoise, remove vein and seeds
  • 3 green onions, chopped, ¼” chopped
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (if you are doing a Whole30 or a Paleo diet, see recommendations for swapping it below)
  • ½ tsp fish sauce (if you are doing a Whole30 or a Paleo diet, make sure the fish sauce you purchase is compliant)
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (gochugaru)
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper

Can I make this Asian-style Jalapeno Green Onion Sauce Whole30 or Paleo approved?

Yes, you can! Simply use coconut aminos in the place of soy sauce for Whole30’ers. We would just suggest adding a pinch of salt to replace a bit of the salt lost from not using soy sauce. Or if you are doing Paleo, you could use a Tamari sauce, like this one. Also, just make sure you find an approved fish sauce that fits your dietary needs. Ta-da! Now it’s Whole30 and/or Paleo approved and it will still be delicious! [[ begin your happy dance ]]

This sauce would also be great with our Korean-style Spinach Rice recipe as well. Korean savory pancake (Pajeon) anyone? This sauce will also pair nicely with pajeon. Fantastic recipe! I used a mix of sweet peppers and jalapenos. Going to serve with korean pork, and keep picking at it in the meantime!

This was awesome. Made this last night to go with pork chops and we almost ate all of it, just the 2 of us! Only change was that I did a quick sauté of 6 garlic cloves in sesame oil – just to get the bite out of the garlic. Also, I used regular red pepper flakes because that’s what we had on hand. My partner has tried to duplicate this off the cuff and hasn’t been successful. He’s tickled that we found this recipe. Thank you!

Yay! So glad to hear you both loved this recipe! I love that you used it to go with pork chops! Yum! Sautéeing the garlic a bit to take the edge off the garlic is a great idea too. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a kind comment, Janice! 🙂
